PNC Rideshare
Issue date: 1/25/10 Section: News
At the end of January students will be able to participate in a new program, designed to contribute to the greening of the campus and the environment. "Rideshare" will encourage students to carpool to school.
The Rideshare program is part of a vision of the campus that was suggested by the Chancellor's Leadership Group for a sustainability project. The main goal of the Rideshare program is to reduce the campus carbon footprint.
"Since our campus is 100 percent commuter based, this will really reduce the carbon footprint that our campus has on the world," said Jim Sallee, director of m maintenance and chair of PNC's Sustainability Committee.
The participants in the Rideshare program will receive several incentives. "Students will be given a parking pass good for one semester that will allow them to park in 'A' parking," said Sallee.
Students will be able to sign up for the Rideshare program on separate link on the PNC website. The site address is www.pnc.edu/rideshare. Students will enter in their information and class schedule. Once all of the information is entered, students can choose their co-riders from among a list of other students. Each student will be asked to sign a contract promising adherence to the Rideshare requirements.
"Our goal is to make the sign-up process as user-friendly as possible," Sallee said.
The Rideshare program will be available to full-time and part-time students any time that classes are in session, including both summer sessions. The PNC Porter county campus also will take part in the program.
Once participants are matched, how they work the program is entirely up to the participants.-passengers can agree to pay the car owner/driver for gas, co-riders can switch weeks for driving, or they can work out some other agreement-"whatever works for them and their Rideshare partners," said Sallee.
Sallee encourages students to take advantage of the Rideshare program, but does note, "If you find that the program does not work for you, you can exit at any time." For more information contact Jim Sallee at jsallee@pnc.edu.
